NTL,
Crawley Court. The expansion of telecommunications demanded
an extension to Crawley Court, to increase the parking considerably
and erect a number of satellite dishes in the new Teleport.
Planners were concerned for the setting of the building, increased
car movements, light pollution at night and the visual impact
on the surrounding countryside. I was employed to carry out
a Visual Impact Assessment, co-ordinate studies on alternative
methods of transport to reduce the parking demand, and a study
of the site to ascertain the development capacity of the site
without destroying the essential character. Through public
and private meetings with the Local Planning Authority a compromise
was reached which maintained the functionality of the building
and enhanced the quality of the landscaped environment.
